Take the next step in understanding

your IGF-1 level and your acromegaly

Tony, living with acromegaly.

Welcome!

Your IGF-1 level is a key measurement your doctors use to determine if your acromegaly is controlled. Understanding what your IGF-1 level means can be confusing because everyone has a different “normal” range for IGF-1 based on their age, sex, and the type of IGF-1 test used.

The IGF-1 calculator helps by converting your level to a score that lets you know how close you are to something called the upper limit of normal (ULN).

Have questions? Learn more about the ULN before you get started.

When you’re ready to proceed, you will need

1. Your most recent IGF-1 level
2. The name of your test provider (for example, Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics)

This tool does not provide clinical recommendations. Consult your doctor to discuss your IGF-1 level or any other questions you have about your acromegaly. This information is intended for US patients only.

IGF-1=insulin-like growth factor 1.

Select your provider/test type

Different labs use different tests to measure IGF-1 levels, and each test has different reference ranges for normal IGF-1. That’s why it’s important to know which provider did your test. Select your test provider below.

*LC-MS=liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Enter your age at the time of your last test

IGF-1 reference ranges vary by age. This information helps us provide accurate results. The calculator is optimized for the age range used by the test type you selected, in this case 18 to 90 years.

Your age is outside of the 18-90 years threshold needed to calculate a score. Please input a new age number.

Enter your IGF-1 level

Enter the IGF-1 value from your lab test results (in ng/mL). Valid values for the IGF-1 test you selected range from 10-1200 ng/mL.

Your IGF-1 level is outside of the 10-1200 ng per mL threshold needed to calculate a score. Please input a new number.

Unsure about your IGF-1 level? Take a look at our breakdown to make sure you are accurately recording your number.

Your IGF-1 score

[1.5× ULN]
Normal Slightly elevated Elevated
Your score: 1.5× ULN

Normal reference range: 119284 ng/mL

Your results summary

  • IGF-1 level 426 ng/mL
  • Age 35–40 years
  • Sex Male
  • Test provider Labcorp (IDS-iSYS)

The takeaway

Your IGF-1 level is above the normal range at 1.5×ULN. Living with elevated IGF-1 levels can lead to an increased risk of cardiac, respiratory, and metabolic diseases. Talk to your doctor about your current treatment approach.

Your score cannot be calculated

If you don’t know which test was used to determine your current IGF-1 number, check your medical records or ask your healthcare provider for assistance.

We can’t calculate your score because we don’t have your test type

The calculator assesses results from the 2 most commonly used providers for diagnostic testing in the US, but there are other providers used for testing IGF-1 levels. You can help us improve by inputting your test provider below.

Please enter a valid value.
Understanding your test type

Labcorp uses the IDS-iSYS test while Quest Diagnostics uses a technique called LC-MS. These are 2 of the most common ways to determine IGF-1 levels.

IGF-1 levels can vary based on the test provider because each test uses its own normal range, depending on a person’s age and sex. Ask your healthcare provider which test was used to determine your IGF-1 level.

Understanding the upper limit of normal

What is the ULN?

The ULN is the highest number that’s still considered a normal result for a lab test based on your age, sex, and the type of test you received. Doctors use the ULN to help decide if your levels are too high. If your IGF-1 is at or below the ULN, it’s usually a sign that your acromegaly is under better control. If it’s above the ULN, it may mean your condition isn’t fully managed and that changes to your treatment could be required.

One main goal of acromegaly treatment is to bring your IGF-1 level down to the ULN, to help manage symptoms and prevent complications.

What your score tells you

Your IGF-1 calculator score will show you where your level is relative to the normal range, so you can see whether it’s low, within range, or elevated.

Where to find your IGF-1 level

Look under results online or in the lab documentation provided for a 2- to 4-digit number. This will be your IGF-1 level.

If you’re having trouble finding your results:
Visit Labcorp’s Patient Portal or Quest Diagnostics’ MyQuest Portal.
